Trustees to discuss recreation center at May 10 meeting

The Berthoud Board of Trustees will discuss a highly anticipated Berthoud Recreation Center proposal at its May 10 meeting.

The meeting will be a discussion only and no action will be taken, as town administration recommended waiting until after the Parks, Open Space, Recreation and Trails (PORT) Plan draft has been presented to the board at its May 24 meeting before providing final direction.

At the trustees’ April 26 meeting, a brief discussion regarding efforts to construct a new recreation center was brought up as a very high priority for the trustees and the community. Town Administrator Mike Hart suggested that the trustees postpone further discussion until this May 10 meeting where a lot of the questions asked that night by new trustees would be answered.

Since there has been a lot of preliminary work done during the past year, Hart felt it was important for the trustees to receive an update on the efforts to-date and information from consultants, GreenPlay, LLC, a parks and recreation focused consulting firm based in Broomfield, who has received community input regarding the recreation center in preparing for the PORT master plan, according to a memo from Hart.

The town commissioned a PORT master plan survey as part of an effort to update the town’s existing plan earlier this year. The survey was mailed to 2,000 residents and an online survey was available in March for residents to provide input.

The town announced the recreation center discussion on its Facebook page, Thursday, saying that the discussion will focus on Waggener Farm and the potential new town recreation center. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. but there are several items listed prior to the recreation center discussion.
