Reserve firefighter wins life-saving award
The Surveyor
Berthoud Fire Protection District (BFPD) celebrated one of its own recently. Reserve firefighter, Jourdon Mazur, received a life-saving award on Feb. 28 for reviving an unconscious child while on duty as a lifeguard at the Chilson Recreation Center earlier in February.
Mazur, who has been with BFPD as a reserve firefighter since November 2016, is also a full-time lifeguard at the Chilson Recreation Center in Loveland. On Saturday, Feb. 3, an unconscious 6-year-old was pulled from the swimming pool at the recreation center. Mazur, who was an on duty as a lifeguard, went quickly into action, having others call 911 while starting his life-saving efforts of chest compressions on the child. Loveland Fire Rescue Authority
(LFRA) and Thompson Valley EMS were dispatched to the call and when on scene saw the child began to regain consciousness. Because of Firefighter Mazur’s courage and proficiency of skills and abilities the child survived the incident and is back to life as a normal 6-year-old. On Feb. 28 LFRA’s Chief Mark Miller and the board of directors acknowledged Mazur with a prestigious life-saving award and commended his heroic actions. Mazur’s family, friends, coworkers and the command staff at Berthoud Fire were all present to congratulate the tremendous deed.
