Girls soccer: Lady Spartans rout Mountain View
As they prepare to begin a critical stretch of the season, where they will play eight Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) matches in a three-week stretch, the Berthoud High School (BHS) girls soccer team got a huge 9-1 win over Mountain View on Saturday, April 1.
Berthoud’s McKayla Workman had a hat-trick for the Lady Spartans, scoring three goals and contributing a pair of assists en route to the 9-1 spanking of Mountain View. Fellow-seniors Hannah Stippich and Amber Torres scored twice, while Kyley Leatherwood and standout Jade Glasser also got in on the scoring frenzy with a goal apiece. Glasser and Workman are tied for the team lead with four goals each through five games played, with Workman having a slight edge over Glasser in total points, 12 to 11.
Berthoud’s senior goalkeeper Hayley Leatherwood saved six shots on the afternoon as only Lady Lion freshman forward Molly Miller got one into the net for Mountain View’s only score of the match. Hayley Leatherwood, as Berthoud’s primary keeper, has tallied 15 saves in her three starts in-net.
The day prior, the Lady Spartans dropped their first TVC match of the season to Skyline by a 4-1 final. Sophomore Kyley Leatherwood scored Berthoud’s only goal of the game on an assist from Glasser, but it was not enough to overcome the 3-0 lead Skyline had built in the first half.
Berthoud (2-3, 0-1) will travel to Mead for their second TVC match of the season on April 11 and will face off with Nebraska-based Gering High School at the Loveland Sports Park on April 16.
Girls tennis: Berthoud takes second at Spring Shootout
The Berthoud girls took the silver medal in the four-team Spring Shootout in Windsor on April 1. The Lady Spartans 20 points bested Sterling (14) and Bear Creek (12) but came up short of the host team Lady Wizard’s 24. Berthoud took first place in a pair of sets and second in another two.
In three singles, Berthoud’s Teagan Ives beat McKinzie Davis of Sterling 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) after having earlier defeated Windsor’s Julia Valdivia 6-3, 7-5. Four doubles saw Berthoud’s tandem of Meghan Lucero and Delaney Fouts defeat Windsor’s Sydney Bohlinger-Stella Penford twosome 6-3, 6-4. Earlier, Lucero/Fouts got the best of Maya DeLauro and Aivy Troung of Bear Creek in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-1.
After dominating Julia Ssessanga and Emily Lovell 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, Berthoud’s two doubles pairing of Emily Casper and Carly Thomas fell to Winsdor’s Ally Kerr/Maddie Pigg team, 6-3, 7-5, to take second place. Berthoud’s three doubles team of Jenna Whitmore and Lilli Homeier also won their first match in convincing fashion, 7-5, 6-2 over Bear Creek’s Sonia Abraham/Lauren Mason in three double,s but fell 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 to Sam Weist and Payton Mann of Windsor.
Berthoud senior and one singles competitor Emily Marty, who entered the Spring Shootout undefeated on the season, took third place by defeating Miranda Arballo of Sterling 6-4, 6-2.
Berthoud travels to Skyline to face the Lady Falcons for their next match on April 11. The Lady Spartans then host a pair of matches back-to-back, welcoming Eaton on April 14 and Frederick on April 18 to the BHS courts.
