Girls golf: Lady Spartans suffer rough outing at Pelican Lakes

Competing at one of the toughest venues they have played all season, and in deplorable conditions that featured challenging and unpredictable winds, the Berthoud High School (BHS) girls golf team finished third-to-last in the Windsor Invitational at Pelican Lakes on Monday, April 25.

Berthoud junior Molli Boruff, twice a tournament champion this season, had the best finish for the Lady Spartans by shooting a 20-over 92 but was well behind Colorado Academy’s Kacey Goodwin, who took first with a 75. Shannyn McEntee (111), Alex Ryan (125) and Kaitlyn Wood (131) also competed for Berthoud, whose team score of 328 bested only Resurrection Christian and Roosevelt in the 22-team field.

Berthoud will compete in their regular season finale at Saddleback Golf Course in Firestone, the same venue where they began the season, on May 4. Regionals are also scheduled to take place at Saddleback the following week on Monday, May 9.

Girls soccer: Berthoud gets trudged by Windsor, battle Frederick to a draw

Windsor had a pair of players each notch a hat-trick on Berthoud’s home pitch in an 8-0 win on April 20. Sophomores Margaret Zimmerman and Chaynee Kingsburry each scored three goals for the visiting Lady Wizards.

The Lady Spartans fared better on April 25 in battling Tri-Valley Conference foe Frederick to a 0-0 draw after two overtime periods. Berthoud senior goalkeeper Hayley Leatherwood was masterful in net, saving 11 shots on the evening, but the Berthoud offense was only able to take four shots on goal, all of which were saved by Frederick keeper Amalia Rolf.

Thanks to weather-induced rescheduling, Berthoud (2-5-1, 0-3 conf.) will play their final six games of the season in seven days, beginning by hosting Nebraska-based Gering High School on April 29. The Lady Spartans will also welcome Loveland (April 30), Frederick (May 2) and Roosevelt (May 6) to Max Marr Field in Berthoud over the course of the next week, weather permitting.

Tennis: Lady Spartans wallop Sterling 6-1 on Senior Night

In their penultimate match of the season, and the final on their home courts, the BHS girls’ tennis team took it to the visiting Sterling Lady Tigers, winning six of seven matches.

The premier match of the afternoon – one singles – was the only one that did not go in Berthoud’s favor. Senior Emily Marty fell short in a rematch against Jenna Maxwell of Sterling, 7-5, 6-2. Marty held a 5-2 lead in the first set, but Maxwell’s power was enough to overcome Marty’s savvy play to take both the sets and the match.

Pushed to a third set in both two and three singles, Berthoud prevailed with Abby Nash defeating Khalie Tidemann 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 and Teagan Ives besting McKinzie Davis 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

In the one doubles match, Berthoud’s Leah Marty and Skye Kearney had their way with Cassie Schlueter and Julia Ssessanga, 6-2, 6-0. In two doubles the Lady Spartans were just as dominant, with Carly Thomas and Riley Lundgreen defeating Emily Lovell and Cyntera May 6-3, 6-0. Berthoud’s Jenna Whitmore/Lilli Homeier pairing won 6-1, 6-4 in three doubles and Natalie Stoesz and Delaney Fouts won their four doubles match in dominant fashion, 6-1, 6-2.

Track and field: Boys take first, girls second, at Max Marr Spartan Classic

Berthoud sophomore Cally Castles took first in three events at the Max Marr Spartan Classic on April 21, winning both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles as well as the high jump. Senior Max Bump won both the shotput and discus throws for Berthoud at Spartan Classic as well. Berthoud’s dominance in the field events was nearly absolute as Everett Owens and Wyatt Woodrick won the triple and long jumps, respectively.

On the ladies side, Berthoud was powered to a second-place finish in part due to a pair of gold medals from senior athlete Alyssa Strong. The University of Colorado – Colorado Springs commit took first in both the 100 hurdles and the triple jump, while Kristina Cavey won the high jump. Berthoud seniors Kelly Chamberlain and Josie Spitz tied for the pole vault gold and Hannah Langer took first in the 300 hurdles.

Two days later the Spartans competed at the Randall Hess Invitational at Roosevelt High School in Johnstown. Berthoud’s boys team finished in third place while the girls team took fourth in the 20-team meet.

Bump took first in both shot and discus again at Randall Hess, throwing for 46’9.50” and 140’, respectively, to win by a wide margin. Jamie Gray took third in shot (44’ 6.50”) and Chad Ellis second in discus (131’ 8.00”) for the Spartans. Woodrick once again took first in the long jump, narrowly beating his teammate Ryan Schmad 20’2.75” to 20’ 2.25”.

Freshman Cailey Archer continues to impress for Berthoud, taking first place in the girls high jump by clearing 5’2.50” after having tied for second behind teammate Cavey at the Spartan Classic just two days prior. Spitz cleared 11’ 8.00” in the pole vault, a full inch over the four-way tie for second that included Chamberlain, to take first place. Strong took home the gold in triple jump with a 35’8.00” jump.
Berthoud competes in the Welco Championships in Frederick on Saturday, April 30, in what will be their last regular season meet of the year. The Spartan track team, which numbers 95 athletes when combining both genders, will then vie for a chance to compete at the state meet at the conference championships on May 6 and 7.
