Turner Middle School (TMS) implemented a secure perimeter as a precautionary measure for 37 minutes in the late morning hours of Tuesday Nov. 6. According to Public Information Officer David Moore, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department was alerted of an issue in Boulder County that involved family members reporting a distraught adult male who had attempted self-harm. The individual left Boulder County heading north toward Berthoud. The adult male’s vehicle was located in Berthoud in the parking lot of the A&W restaurant located at 802 Mountain Ave. Due to the vehicle’s close proximity to TMS and deputies being unsure if the distraught person was armed or what their intentions were, the secure perimeter was put in place. The individual was located at a relative’s house in Berthoud soon after the vehicle was discovered and the measure was lifted. A co-responder along with a mental health deputy took over the situation from there.

Moore said, “At no time was there any immediate danger to students or staff,” and the actions taken by police and the school were “100 percent precautionary.”

A secure perimeter means no students, staff, or any other person are allowed to enter or leave the school building but movement within the building is permitted. The Secure perimeter is in effect until authorities have confirmed any situations have been resolved and it is safe to do so.
