Sandra ‘Sandy’ Kay Mathre: March 22, 1954 – March 8, 2016
Sandra “Sandy” Kay Mathre (Schuetz), of Berthoud, Colo., died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the age of 61.
Sandy was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on March 22, 1954, to Chester “Chet” and Katherine “Kathy” Block. She was the second of five children and was exceptionally close to her parents and siblings, even in adulthood. After getting an education in ultrasound technology, Sandy moved to Colorado where she got a job at Boulder Community Hospital (BCH). She stayed with BCH for over 20 years, working as the head of ultrasound until her retirement. In 1982 Sandy married John Schuetz, with whom she had her two sons. They enjoyed 16 years of loving marriage until he passed in 1999. Sandy’s husband, Jim Mathre, came into her life in 2001. The two married in November of 2006 and enjoyed a marriage filled with love and adventure. They retired in Ecuador, which she loved, as the homes they had there perfectly reflected her love of water and the mountains. Sandy was loving, accepting, compassionate, empathetic, witty and stubborn – she was a friend to all who knew her. She was very spiritual and had a love for angels; they were everywhere in her home. Sandy loved the outdoors and spending time in her flower garden “with her hands in the dirt.” The most important thing to her, however, was her family, whom she loved with all of her being.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband, Jim Mathre, of Berthoud, Colo.; her two sons, Joe (Heather) Schuetz of Loveland, Colo., and Mike (Tonya) Schuetz of Erie, Colo.; three grandchildren whom she loved endlessly, Landon, Avery and Lily; two step-children, Erin (Mike) Davies of North Bend, Wash., and Clay Mathre of Denver, Colo.; her mother, Kathy Block of Florence, Ariz.; and Warba, Minn.; three siblings, Steve (Robin) Block of Warba, Minn., and Pam (Doug) Leppanen of Duluth, Minn., Jenny (Jim) Berkeland of Cohasset; and a sister-in-law, Barb Block of Warba, Minn. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Sandy was preceded in death by her first husband, John; her father, Chet; and her brother, Doug.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the Berthoud Community Center, 248 Welch Ave., Berthoud, CO 80513. Flowers are welcome contributions and may be sent to The Schuetz Residence – 2106 Primrose Lane, Erie, CO 80516.
A second memorial service will be held in Grand Rapids, Minn. on March 16, 2016.
