Special to the Surveyor

Citizens of the Year: Dave and Julia Sabados and Kevin and Mia Sabados Humacher.

Citizens of the Year: Dave and Julia Sabados and Kevin and Mia Sabados Humacher.

The Berthoud Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) held its annual dinner and award ceremony on Jan. 10 at Brookside Gardens in Berthoud. This annual event included dinner, a silent and live auction and the annual awards for Citizen of the Year, the Doc Fickel Award, Business of the Year and Ambassador of the Year.
Citizens of the Year went to Dave and Julia Sabados (and family). Whenever there is a need in the community, there is always one family that will be there with any help they can provide. The Sabados family hosts a week of kindness every year. This week stresses kindness and community kinship. Every school is involved. There is an assembly, pay it forward pins and collections of various items for children with cancer on Alex Sabados day. The town is decorated with orange balloons and each business is offered free coffee to serve to anyone coming into their business. They also do a community clean-up day.
Besides the Alex Sabados week, the Sabados family contributes to the community by attending or helping with almost every fundraising event in town.

Doc Fickel Award: Barbara Mitteis

Doc Fickel Award: Barbara Mitteis

The Doc Fickel award was awarded posthumously to longtime Berthoud resident Barbara Mitteis who passed away in November 2014. Barb worked on many philanthropic projects since she “temporarily” moved to Berthoud 25 years ago. Barb not only dedicated her time and efforts to the success of the Berthoud Chamber of Commerce, she was a whole-hearted believer in the town of Berthoud. She even participated in the future planning for the town.
When anyone was in need, Barb was there. When something needed to be done, Barb was there. She didn’t know the meaning of the word, “no.” She was never too busy to help. Barb always had a kind word for everyone. She truly lived in service to others — family, friends and community.

Business of the Year: City Star Brewing, John and Whitney Way.

Business of the Year: City Star Brewing, John and Whitney Way.

Congratulations to City Star Brewing for being voted Business of the Year. Since City Star opened two-and-a-half years ago, Whitney and John Way have worked non-stop to create community spirit, fund raise for almost every cause presented to them and to donate to many events not only in Berthoud but also in neighboring towns. They constantly hold events in the taproom in order to benefit people and organizations in need. They helped with the High Park fire in 2012, with the flooding in 2013, hosted the Hops & Harley Event, Movember Event and have become a hub for the Berthoud Social Run. City Star has gone above and beyond the call of duty in every time of need. John and Whitney are a fabulous team; they treat their employees with tremendous amount of gratitude and have also brought life to downtown Berthoud.
Congratulations to Kelly Doane with Adams Bank & Trust for being voted

Ambassador of the Year: Kelly Doane

Ambassador of the Year: Kelly Doane

Ambassador of the Year. Kelly has been an Ambassador for over two years and attended every single monthly meeting of the Ambassadors in 2014. Kelly has sat on four event committees and was the only Ambassador to chair a committee in 2014. Kelly clocked in at 75.5 hours alone in volunteer time (not counting all the hours she put in on this Installation Dinner in December). Kelly was also voted Ambassador of the Month for January by her fellow Ambassadors.
