Melanie Rae Hargett

It is with great sadness the family of Melanie Rae Hargett announces her passing. Melanie was born Oct. 12, 1996, and passed away in Longmont on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, at the age of 21.
There was a public celebration of Melanie’s life at Grace Place Church in Berthoud on Thursday, Feb. 1, officiated by Pastor Clay Peck who, along with his wife Selene, lovingly hosted Melanie in their home for a short time.
Melanie had big blue eyes and an even bigger heart. Teasing her younger brother AJ was a favorite pastime. She deeply loved all her pets, including her rescue cat Cupid and her guinea pig Simon, as well as underdog hurting souls whom she frequently showed compassion by making and giving intricate woven bracelets. Sewing heated rice bags was her specialty, and she gifted them to many friends. When she found time to relax; she loved to read, journal, knit, or watch Grey’s Anatomy. She loved to share her personal story to help others. Encouragement was her special gift, and she always sought creative methods to make people feel good. She always gave more than she had.
Mel was no stranger to adversity, losing her adored dad Andy to brain cancer when she was in third grade. Life presented many challenges, but with her loving mother as her greatest champion and advocate, Melanie persevered to grow deeper in her Christian faith and strength of character while at Teen Challenge. One of her greatest accomplishments was the day she graduated from Berthoud High School in May, 2016. Although her body was very fragile from life choices, Crohns Disease and recent emergency appendectomy, her spirit was strong and she gave us all a run for our money. While full of grief that she left us so early, we are deeply thankful for God’s mercy. Melanie fought the good fight, and now we find comfort that she is in the arms of Jesus.
Melanie was loved by many friends and family, including her devoted mother Laura Davis Hargett, father Andy Hargett (deceased) and brother Andrew (Berthoud); maternal grandparents Billy and Carolyn Davis (deceased), aunt Susan (Kelly) Davis Waffle, uncles Scott (Melanie) Davis (Virginia) and Jimmy Davis (Chicago); paternal grandparents Frank and Valerie Hargett (both deceased), aunts Julie Steinley (Conroe, Texas), Melissa Hargett, (Longmont), uncles Jeffrey (Meg) Hargett, (Longmont) and Bradley (Jackie) Hargett (Aurora); and also survived by Dan King, grandparents Mary and Larry King (Fort Collins) aunts Lindsey (Andy) Annan (Nunn) and Alicia (John) Leech, (Tennessee) along with many much-loved cousins. Melanie was especially close to her cousin Heather and husband Scott Rochat, with whom she lived the past 14 months in the home where her beloved father grew up.
In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations in care of Melanie’s Compassionate Hope Fund at Guaranty Bank and Trust of Berthoud to help with ongoing family support and funeral costs.
