Berthoud entered the Region-10 tournament as the No.-27 seed and defeated No.-10 Palisade 3-2 (19-25, 25-15, 15-25, 25-21, 15-11) and No.-15 Pueblo County three sets to one to punch their ticket to this week’s state championship tournament. It will be Berthoud’s third trip to state in the last four years, and the Lady Spartans enter as hot as any team in Class 4A bracket, having won seven of their last eight matches. This year the state tournament will feature a double-elimination bracket format rather than the pool-play format used in the past. Berthoud will play conference rival Mead, who got the best of Berthoud in both of the teams’ matchups this year, in the opening round Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
