The Berthoud Spartans cross country season starts this Friday, Aug. 26, as runners will participate in the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede held at the Norris-Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs.

According to head coach and Surveyor contributor, Krisi Leonard, the boys are optimistic about their position this season.

“The boys team should do well in our conference this year,” Leonard said.

The cross country teams compete this year in 3A, after dropping a level from last year. But the competition isn’t any easier, according to Leonard.

“Our region has some of the best schools in the state, so it will still be tough to qualify to state,” she said.

Berthoud’s top runners include senior Josh Doyle and juniors Noah Burtis, Ty Williams and Murphy Zimerling, who should help the team’s chances for a state run.

The team has a handful of up-and-coming talent, as well, such as sophomore Kade Leonard.

For the girls, juniors Maycee White and Alyssa Radloff will anchor the team, along with freshman Alex Schultz and sophomores Cailey Archer and Kathryn Mathiesen.
