An accident involving a 14-year-old bicyclist and a semi-truck Tuesday morning closed a portion of 10th Street between Mountain Avenue and Welch Avenue for close to three hours.

According to David Moore, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, deputies were notified at 7:13 a.m. Tuesday morning of a collision involving a juvenile on a bicycle and a semi-truck. Deputies responded to the scene and immediately called for medical assistance. The juvenile was transported to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries shortly after deputies arrived, Moore said.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team determined the commercial truck and trailer was traveling west, exiting the alley between Mountain and Welch avenues, when the truck driver turned right to head north. At that point, the bicyclist hit the trailer near the rear. The cyclist was traveling southbound on the northbound side of the road, according to the report and was distracted when the accident occurred.

“The quick reaction of the truck driver to stop the vehicle most likely prevented the bicyclist’s injuries from being more severe,” the report stated.

The sheriff’s office hasn’t determined if any charges will be filed against the cyclist. The truck driver wasn’t cited.
