National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day April 30

Berthoud residents have an opportunity to drop off unwanted or outdated prescription drugs this weekend.

On Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public the opportunity to rid their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Please take advantage of this free and anonymous opportunity to help prevent pill abuse and theft.

This year there are three locations for pill disposal:

Berthoud – Town Hall, 328 Massachusetts Ave.

Wellington – Family Dollar, 8099 South Sixth St.

Red Feather Lakes – Red Feather Lakes Fire Protection District, 44 Firehouse Lane

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The DEA also now advises the usual methods of disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – both pose potential safety and health hazards.
