Berthoud will remember local veterans this Veterans Day. On Nov. 11, veterans are welcome to attend the third annual Veterans Day celebration at Berthoud High School as The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 67, along with Principal Chris Garcia and the school’s staff and students, recognize veterans for their service.

President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Laurel Downer, said the event at the BHS auditorium begins at 1 p.m. During the two-hour program, students will greet the former members of the military and read poems and letters. The BHS Bridge Between choir will also perform.

Downer said the auxiliary, along with the Justin Bauer Memorial Post 67 of the American Legion, will host a dinner and silent auction on Saturday, Nov. 14. There will be appetizers along with a cash bar at 5 p.m., and the opening ceremonies start at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Origins Catering provides the food. All activities take place at Brookside Gardens, 619 East County Road 8 in Berthoud.

The cost for the event is $150 for a table, $20 for general admission, and veterans pay $10. Downer says proceeds from the Saturday evening event and auction will provide support for local military men and women and the families of those serving here and abroad.

This is the second year for the American Legion-sponsored event. Last year the proceeds helped assist veterans taking part in an eight-week riding course at Hearts and Horses.

Additionally, the dinner organizers ask that those attending bring a new stuffed animal. Fire hose Self Storage in Loveland will donate the stuffed animals to the Loveland Fire Department for use with children in traumatic situations.

“This will be an awesome time to thank vets,” said Downer in summing up the two events.
