David Mineo attributes his love of dance as an art form to the fact he was in his 30s the first time he took a dance lesson. “I missed all the recital-type cutesy stuff,” he said. “Being an older dance student, I went the more contemporary route, viewing dance as an art, not a sport.”

Since that first lesson, Mineo has completed years of formal training, performing in dozens of productions before taking the role of artistic director at Berthoud Dance Company when it made its debut in town 11 years ago. A diverse company featuring around 70 students from Berthoud to Denver, the studio prides itself on its array of genres, from Irish dance to hip-hop.

“So many dance recitals are just the same old kicks and turns,” said Mineo, in response to what makes his dance company special. “Our interesting, thought-provoking performances are definitely different from most recitals you see. Being original and creative is what we pride ourselves on.”

The dance company takes the stage at local events throughout the year and presents large performances at the historic Rialto Theatre in Loveland twice each year. Their spring performances will take place June 11 at 7:30 p.m., and June 12 at 1 p.m.

“We love to bring in special guests,” said Mineo, whose line-up for the up-coming performance includes Berthoud fiddler Joe Vittitoe, Ricky Al from Denver popping crew Machinez Remainz, integrated dance company Spoke N Motion, and others.

Mineo said guests won’t want to miss the tribute to BB King, the contemporary ballet performed to Chelsea Wolfe’s “Flat Lands,” and the opening piece, “Dimensions,” which he said features unique lighting effects and “will make people wonder.” Mineo also hinted the company would bring back a favorite piece from a few years ago, featuring an 8mm projector.

Tickets for the June 11-12 performances cost $15 for adults and $12 for children and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at www.rialtoloveland.ticketforce.com or by visiting the historic Rialto Theater at 228 E. Fourth St. in Loveland.
