Beck, Mathena added to Berthoud Sports HOF Committee
By Surveyor Staff
Longtime contributors to the Berthoud community and athletics in particular, John Beck and Rusty Mathena have been added to the Berthoud Sports Hall of Fame Committee.
“John and Rusty bring tremendous institutional knowledge to the committee as we evaluate HOF nominations and ultimately make the decisions on the induction class as well as the variety of awards and scholarships we present to our young people in the community,” said John Hall, Chairman of the Berthoud Sports Hall of Fame.
The Berthoud Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Awards Ceremony is scheduled for May 27th at the Brookside Gardens Events Center. The Class of 2015 includes Tim Bieri, Jasmine Cervantes, Alisa Heronema, John Mitchell, Jack Sommers and Trevor Wikre.
“Being a part of this committee is an honor,” said Mathena. “It’s a great opportunity to recognize both career accomplishments with induction into the HOF and highlight achievements by our young people from the past year.”
Mathena was inducted into the HOF last year as part of the Class of 2014.
“It’s good to recognize the Hall of Fame inductees, the student athletes and the parents who sacrifice so much time for their kids,” said Beck. “This event allows us promote some very positive things in our community.”
Along with Hall, Beck and Mathena the HOF committee consists of Vice Chairman Brad Pickert, Treasurer Dan Karpiel and Secretary Aaron Rath along with committee member Kevin Ruebesam.
In addition to the inductees ceremony, six scholarships will be awarded at the event. The Berthoud Surveyor Athlete of the Year will be awarded to a senior male and female student athlete from BHS. The Steve Fraser Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a senior male and female BHS student athlete. Three new awards have been added this year that include the Angelo Dabbiero Courage Award, the Derek Good Award and the HOF Coach of the Year.
The induction ceremony will also include introducing each Berthoud Weekly Surveyor Athlete of the Week from the 2014-2015 school year.
